How To Install Windows 10 On Your Computer Or Laptop

This article is from liberiangeek.net.

Microsoft has just announced the release of Windows 10, but before you can go and get yourself a copy, hear this first; it’s not available just yet to be purchased.

If you wish to install Windows 10, you must download the evaluation ISO copy or Windows 10 Technical Preview copy which is available for free for testing purposes only. This brief tutorial is going to show you how to do that if you don’t already know.

For more about Windows 10, please go here and see what’s Microsoft has to say about it. I am not going to be saying much here about it because I haven’t tested it.

So, to get a tech preview ISO copy, go and register for an account to join Windows Insider Program. The Insider Program allows tech professionals, and IP enthusiasts to preview Microsoft newest operating systems before they’re released to the public.

  • Join Microsoft Insider Program

To get Windows 10 right now, you must go and join Microsoft Insider Program, it’s free. Just go to the link below and sign up if you don’t already have a @hotmail.com, @live.com or @outlook.com account.

If you do have one of the above accounts, then you’ll be able to sign on and download an ISO copy of Windows 10.

http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/preview

  • Download The ISO File

Next go the technical preview link to download the ISO file. You can then burn the ISO file onto a CD/DVD and boot your computer from it. The ISO file should also work if you have virtual software like VirtualBox or WMware Workstation installed.

Since Windows 10 is still in beta or previews state, don’t install it as a production environment. There will be a time that Microsoft will disable this previous version and force your to purchase a copy to use.

So, use it only for testing purposes and nothing else.

After you’ve downloaded a copy of the ISO file, burn it to a CD/DVD. Or use a virtualization to test. When you boot Windows, it will prompted you whether to upgrade or perform a custom installation.

Select custom installation to continue.

Windows file will begin to copy and install. Wait until the installation is complete and Windows has rebooted. After that, you’ll be prompted to customize the installation or use express settings.

The express settings option works OK.

If you want to create a local account and not a Microsoft online account, then select the option to create a new account. If you want to use your Microsoft Online account to sign on, then type your email address and password below to sign on.

Again, if you wish to sign on with local account and now with a Microsoft online account, click the link the reads Sign in without a Microsoft account.

This option will allow you to create a local username and password and use them to always sign on.

Next, create your username and password to sign on. Then wait for Windows to log you on. That’s how Windows 10 desktop looks like.

That’s it! Enjoy!

8 Amazing Uses of SmartPhones and Tablets

Smart devices have redefine conveniences to a whole new meaning. You can now order your food through your phone, pay summons, get a job, apply leave and even watch your baby in another room! Here is a compilation of 8 different use of smart devices for personal use and business use.

Personal

1.    Remote Keyboard and Mouse for your Computer

Some of us especially student, uses their laptop extensively. Most use it for working and an entertainment system such as playing games and watching movies. There are times when you are away from keyboard watching movies but want to increase the volume of your laptop. Sometime, we are just too lazy to get up from our bed and go to the computer which is 3 feet away (??) to increase the volume. Hey, fret not! Just install a remote keyboard and mouse app in your smartphone and connect to the computer. It’s that easy!

Unable to resolve URL.

2.    Car Navigation System

I’ve used a number of GPS system for the past few years and most of the time, I’m quite disappointed with the accuracy of the navigation system. New roads being built every year and some of the data are not relevant anymore. I love google map and I used it as my main navigation system in the car. Just a get a cheapo android tablet with 7 inch screen, a mount for the tablet and you get yourself a reliable Car Navigation System!

3.    Car Entertainment System

A lot of people looking for ways to integrate their android or iOS devices into their car for different purposes but most just want to use it for entertainment system. With such demands, in-car entertainment system manufacturers are taking this opportunity to produce android-based or iOS-based car entertainment system and some are already out in the market. You can now play your favorite games such as candy crush and clash of clans in your car while driving! How cool is that?!

4.    Digital Picture Frame

If you have old android tablet which are not in use, why not turn it into a digital picture frame. There are a number of apps which turn your android device to a digital picture frame. Some of more advanced app lets you connect to your favourite your social media site such facebook, flickr even instagram and display your picture which you have uploaded. Be careful though, you might increase your electricity bills!

Businesses

5.    Restaurant Ordering System for Waiters

Businesses are looking for more ways to serve their customer faster and better. There are a number of apps which are built for waiter/waitress to take order from the customer and send the order straight away to the kitchen without them having to walk to the kitchen or docket. It really saves time and restaurants might use its waiter/waitress more efficiently.

6.    Point-of-Sales System (POS)

With the rise of tablets popularity in the market, innovative people are coming out with different idea daily. One of it is tablet based Point-of-Sales system. In the US, a lot of restaurants start using iPad as their POS system as it is less bulky and more elegant. Some of the POS apps provide cloud based data storage with analytics and reports built-in. Hey, it also good as a conversation starter!

7.    Information Kiosk

Traditional kiosk is bulky and very expensive. That’s only the hardware parts.  If you need an interactive kiosk, you will need to pay a hefty sum of money to customize it to suit your business and it’s not easy to modify. Using a tablet, you can get a more elegant, less expensive and space saving information with interactivity included. You can make it more fun for people waiting to get their coffee by playing a simple game on the information kiosk.

A variant of the information kiosk is a digital signage. So, businesses can earn more by showing ads of other business in their premise.

8.    Mobile POS System

We talked about POS system earlier. In the above example, the POS system is more suited for businesses that are stationed in one place such as restaurant. What about business that are mobile such as taxi drivers or event pizza delivery? Usually, these people don’t really accept credit card as a payment due to their nature of business which is mobile but now they can with Mobile POS system. So no more excuse for the customer not to pay on the spot!

How to set up your own personal home web server

This article is taken from Lifehacker.com on How to set up a personal home web server

A web server is software that continuously runs on a computer and allows other computers to download documents from it. This text that you're reading right travelled over a network connection from Lifehacker's hosting web server to your browser. Web servers are usually loud, scary, headless machines in cold windowless rooms, but you can run one under your desk at home.

Why would you want to run a home web server? Maybe you want to download files on your home computer from anywhere. Like, say, your digital music collection. In this how-to, we'll set up a home web server that lets anyone (with the right password!) connect to your computer and download your MP3's from it, for a nice way to share your music collection with friends, or play a song from your home machine at the office for co-workers.

Please note: Running a server on your home computer is a risky undertaking, and before you start, make sure your computer has all the latest patches and security updates, and that you've done a thorough spyware and virus scan. This tutorial is for advanced users who feel comfortable editing textual configuration files and exposing port 80 on their home computer to the internet. As always, a strong firewall with explicit user-set rules is recommended. Still game? Carry on.

Let's get started.

What you'll need:

  1. A Windows PC
  2. An always-on broadband (DSL or cable) internet connection

Step 1. Install Apache HTTP server.

First and foremost, disable and stop any other firewall or server software you may have running, including Windows Firewall, Skype, Trillian or any other instant messaging applications. This is extremely important, and if it's not done, can cause the server installation and startup to fail miserably. These programs and services can be started and used again as usual once we're done setting up the web server.

Download Apache HTTP Server from here, using the link next to "Win32 Binary (MSI Installer)." Start the installation wizard. Accept the license agreement and use the default location for the Apache files, in C:\Program Files\Apache Software Foundation\Apache2.2\. When you reach the screen prompting for server information, enter your own email address and homeip.net [3]as the domain information, like so:

Complete the installation wizard using the "Typical installation" setting.

When it's done, open your web browser and go to http://localhost/. If the page you see reads, "If you can see this, it means that the installation of the Apache web server software on this system was successful," you're golden.

Step 2. Configure Apache to share documents from the right folder.

Say you want to make your music collection downloadable using your new web server [5], and all your music files are located in C:\Gina\My Music. Using a plain text editor like Notepad, open the C:\Program Files\Apache Group\Apache2\conf\httpd.conffile. This is Apache's configuration file, which looks long and scary, but most of the defaults will work just fine for us. We just have to change a few things.

In this httpd.conf file, comment out the line that starts with DocumentRoot and add another with your directory, like this:

#DocumentRoot "C:/Program Files/Apache Group/Apache2/htdocs"
DocumentRoot "C:/Gina/My Music"

Then, comment out the line that starts with <Directory "C:/Program... and add another with your directory, like this:

#<Directory "C:/Program Files/Apache Group/Apache2/htdocs">
<Directory "C:/Gina/My Music">

Last, about 20 lines below that

AllowOverride None

Change it to:

AllowOverride All

When you're done, save httpd.conf. Then, click on the Apache icon in your taskbar and choose "Restart." If Apache restarts successfully [6], you edited your the file correctly. Visit http://localhost/ in your web browser. This time you should see a listing of your music files. Woo-hoo!

Step 3. Password your web site documents.

But we don't want just anyone to be able to download your music. Your bandwidth is precious, and we want to secure things a bit. Let's create a password prompt.

First, open a command prompt (go to the Start menu, choose Run, then type cmd.) Change to the Apache bin directory by typing:

cd "C:\Program Files\Apache Software Foundation\Apache2.2\bin"

Then create a password file by typing:

htpasswd -c "C:\Documents and Settings\Gina\my_password_file.txt" gina

Replace the path with the path of your new password file (which should in any folder EXCEPT the web server's document root.) Replace gina with the username you want to use. When prompted, enter the password you want to set up. Once you've done that, a password file will be created.

Now we want to apply that login to your music directory. Open up a new file in a plain text editor like Notepad. Copy and paste the following into it:

AuthType Basic
AuthName "This is a private area, please log in"

AuthUserFile "c:\Documents and Settings\Gina\my_password_file.txt"
AuthGroupFile /dev/null

require valid-user

Make sure you replace "C:\Documents and Settings\Gina\my_password_file.txt" in the text with your own password file created above. Save this new file IN YOUR WEB SERVER DOCUMENT ROOT (in this case, C:\Gina\My Music) and name it .htaccess. Don't forget the dot in the beginning, before .htaccess. So, in this case, we're saving the file as C:\Gina\My Music\ .htaccess.

Note: If you're using Notepad to create your .htaccess file, when you save the file, put quotes around the filename - ".htaccess" - so that Notepad doesn't automatically put a .txt extension on the file. If there's a .txt file extension, your password won't work!

Now, using your web browser, go to http://localhost/. You should be prompted to log in. Enter your username and password you set up in your password file. Rock!

Step 4. Congratulate yourself. You've got a home webserver running.

If you are NOT behind a firewall, you can access your web server from other computers by typing your computer's IP address into a web browser's address bar. If you're not sure what your IP is, visit What Is My IP to find out. If your IP is 12.34.567.890, then type http://12.34.567.890 into a browser's address bar.

If you ARE behind a firewall (like a wireless router), you'll need to open up port 80 on the firewall and forward it to your computer. You can find how to access your home server behind a firewall here.

How to make your USB or Hard Disk compatible to both Mac and Windows (Step by Step guide)

Image Courtesy wonderhowto.com Image Courtesy wonderhowto.com

How many times have we founds ourselves with a USB that only works with our computer and no one else! Often resorting to emailing that massive Powerpoint file 30 minutes later. Today, this is going to end as we have created a fantastic step by step guide on how to make your drive compatible for both Mac and Windows.

I bet you have seen many formats on your computer but understand that your Windows PC and Mac understand one format well and that is exFAT. The exFAT file system eliminates the two major deficiencies of FAT32: the largest partition and file sizes it supports are virtually unlimited by today’s standards. Awesome, it’s perfect! Almost… since exFAT is fairly new, it isn’t compatible with older Macs and PCs. Any Mac running 10.6.5 (Snow Leopard) or 10.7 (Lion) supports exFAT, while PCs running Windows XP SP3, Windows Vista SP1, and Windows 7 are compatible. If you know you’ll be using computers running updated versions of these operating systems, exFAT is the clear best choice.

Format a drive using Disk Utility on a Mac
1. Launch Disk Utility (Applications > Utilities).
2. Select your external hard drive or USB flash drive from the list on the left.
3. Click on the Erase tab. Select the format – Mac OS Extended (HFS+), MS-DOS (FAT32), or exFAT – then name the drive.

4. Click the Erase button and the drive will start formatting. Be aware that formatting a drive deletes all of the files on it, so back up anything important before completing this step.

Now you are ready to conquer the Windows world!

Format a drive using Windows
1. Go to Computer (or My Computer in Windows XP).
2. Select your drive from the list and right-click on it. Choose Format from the contextual menu.
3. A window will pop up where you can choose the format – NTFS, FAT32, or exFAT. Make sure the allocation unit size is set to default and type in a volume label.

4. Click Start to format the drive.

Now you are ready to conquer!

6 Tips on Optimizing Your Android Device Performance

I love old school mobile phones like Nokia 3210 or 3310. I’ve used it for a number of years and it seldom gives me problem, like phone freeze or unable to send SMS (unless I’m out of prepaid. :P ). It gets the job done; sending SMS, making calls and I never have to worry about battery life.

Back to the year 2014, not having a smartphone puts you at disadvantages especially when you are in business. Smartphone make your life and business convenient in a lot of ways but sometime it doesn’t perform as what we expect it to do. So how does one optimize their android device performance?

1.    Know your device
First thing to know is what chip it uses and which revision number it is and whether the WiFi component compatible…..well, we don’t expect for you to know this much but if you are, I salute you! :salute: ☺ It’s good enough for you to know how much memory and what type of storage your device have; internal and external. This is really an important thing to know if you want to really optimize your device performance.

2.    Don’t be an App-aholic!
No offence intended. With more than 1 million apps ready in the Google Play store and lot of cool apps coming each day, some people can’t resist to try out and install everything there is. While it’s fine to install and test out the apps but just make sure that you removed them once you have done testing or when you are not using it anymore. Feeling bloated after eating too much is not really a nice feeling isn’t it? Same goes to your device. If you “bloated” your device with apps, of course it will not be feeling well too.

3.    Widgets anyone? (psst…not you)
Widgets are an extension of an app which you can put on your home screen to provide information on things like weather, latest email and favorite’s contacts. While it might not be a full app, it’s still consuming your device memory and processing time and it’s always running on the background compared to a normal app, which only consuming your resource when the apps is actually running. Keep your widgets to a minimum and you will be a happy customer I guarantee.

4.    Choose your theme/animation carefully
I love theme. It provides us the ability to personalize the look and feel on the Android to our preference but be warned that some theme apps doesn’t work well on some devices. Some theme also provides custom animations to enhance the user experience when interacting with the home screen. Remember that theme is also an app and since you see it whenever you interact with your home screen, it’s also means that it’s running all the time on the background. Choose your theme carefully and my advice just don’t go overboard with the animations especially when you have a live wallpaper ;)

5.    Loose the notifications
Similar to how Widget works, notification always run a service on the background to watch for any event to trigger the notifications. For example, your WhatsApp have 1 process and 1 service always running on the background. The WhatsApp service is the one that watch for the trigger such as new WhatsApp message and notify you on the new message at the top of your home screen. A lot of apps provide these functions. If you don’t really need them, disabled it and you can do it in the apps. In turn, you will have better performing device, more battery life and less buzzing!

6.    Make room for memory
I mentioned a few times on the points above, apps eat memory. When your device starts to feel sluggish and sometime freeze, you know that your device is out of memory. So how do we make room for more memory? Well, the points above should be enough to help you started but if you need further memory optimization, there are a lot of apps out there that can help you with this. Look for keyword such Speed Booster, Task Killer or App Cleaner in the Google Play Store and you will be presented with numerous options. Install, test out and choose whichever suits you and your device the best. Good luck

Is Antivirus Necessary for Android Devices?

Some people think that antivirus on smart phones is a waste of time and resources and some think the opposite. For me, I don’t think it’s a necessary…yet.

There is a lot of misconception on antivirus app on smart devices which many thought for it to be similar to what they had in their desktop or PC. It’s not entirely correct. While similar function as desktop antivirus programs such as URL blocks, scan downloads and apps installed for malware do exist for Android antivirus, you can’t expect it to work like normal desktop antivirus. So, you don’t expect android AV to quarantined files and perform automatic clean up on your android.
Due to the nature of Android operating system, which implements sandboxing process as a part of its built-in security features, each app are isolated from each other. This means that the malware are treated just like another app in the system and to remove it, we just need to uninstall it.

Illustration 1: AV-TEST Website on Android AV Apps Illustration 1: AV-TEST Website on Android AV Apps

So which antivirus apps do you recommends?
It’s all about preference actually. AV-TEST GmbH, is an independent IT security organization that have tested many antivirus programs including apps for androids and they published their monthly findings in their website (http://www.av-test.org/en/antivirus/mobile-devices/android/). You can compare it yourself and test out any one of the recommended apps.

Coming back to my early statement, I don’t think antivirus for android devices is a necessary but it’s just a matter of time for me to change sides. In 2013, AV-TEST GmbH reported about 1.8 million android-related malware samples registered with them and about 6000 new samples received daily. An article by The Telegraph UK (http://www.telegraph.co.uk/technology/news/10225511/Surge-in-malware-on-Android-smartphone-system.html) reported that 44 percent of malware apps subscribed the phone owner to a premium service without their knowledge which the profit is funnel to the malware developers and another 24 percent focus on data stealing.

With Android ever increasing popularity, variance of android-enabled device are coming to market every year from smartphones, smartwatches, to smart TV and now car entertainment system, it is a growing concern and we can only keep our finger cross so that, Google, owner of the Android OS platform and these antivirus apps developer to keep up the good work in securing the platform and make our live less worried ;)

SSD or HDD? What is the right fit for you? HDD and SDD Technology explained

Image courtesy rushinformation.com Image courtesy rushinformation.com

SSD has been in the market for a few years now. Until recently, we had only brands and models to make comparison of the HDD but not since SSD came in. It provides us more options for our storage. If you bought an ultrabook or macbook recently, you most probably are using SSD as the primary drive.

HDD Technology Explained
HDD or Hard Disk Drive was introduced by IBM in 1956 and has been the defacto secondary storage for general purpose computer since.  Each HDD contains a spindle, an actuator arm and layers of thins plates which stores your data. The actuator arm is the one that reads the data from the thin plates. While technology has evolved since then and HDD idea allow manufacturer to produce high capacity drives at a low cost, HDD has reached its limit in term of speed due to the dependency on the mechanical parts. Nowadays you can get up to 6TB of hard disk space from a HDD but the speed remains at 5400 rpm or 7200 rpm for standard HDD.
SSD Technology Explained (Image on the left)

Solid State Drive (SSD) (some referred as solid-state disk or electronic disk) surprisingly has been around since the 1950’s. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Solid-state_drive) Many attempts have been made to make it a viable product but due to the prohibitively high price and low disk space, they were seldom used that is until recently it gains popularity when it provide greater speed than HDD and larger storage (up to 1.2TB at the time of writing) at a competitive price.
SSD is mainly built using circuits and NAND Flash. The NAND Flash is where your data is stored. Since it’s mostly electronic, it does not have dependency on mechanical rotating parts which means the speed is dependent on chip/circuit it uses. We have seen CPU/processing time is double every 18 months, we can surely expect that SSD speed will be pretty much the same.

Advantage of SSD
1.    SSDs are more durable – since it does not have any mechanical parts and rely on NAND flash, it is designed to resist shock up to 1500g/0.5ms.
2.    SSDs are way faster than HDD and quieter– with the less dependencies on mechanical and rotating parts, SSD can have 100 times greater performance, almost instantaneous data access, quicker boot ups, faster file transfers and overall snappier computing experience. It is quieter. Imagine a fan (HDD) and imagine natural wind flow (SSD).
3.    SSDs consume less power and much cooler – again, with the less dependency on mechanical part, SSD required half to a third of the power of HDD. This is more apparent with higher capacity and faster HDD. Generally, consumer SSD use less than 2 Watts compared to consumer HDD at 6 Watts. With less power comes with less heat output ;)
4.    SSDs are lighter – without the extra weight from the platters and other mechanical parts, the average SSD weight is around 77g compared to HDD which 750g.

Advantage of HDD
1.    HDDs provide more storage per dollar than SSD – the highest capacity available on market for SSD today is 4TB and it cost around USD 29,000 compared to 6TB SATA HDD which cost about USD 250. That’s about 100 times cheaper than SSD. For consumer grade SSD, for 1TB is around S$ 999 and 4TB HDD at S$235.
2.    HDDs are easily available – HDD won’t be going away at least for the next couple of years. You have many choices of brands and manufacturer compared to SSD. There is also a few occurrence of NAND Flash (main component in SSD) shortage which caused the SSD price to rise.

End note
If you have the need for speed, like playing high performance games or just want to have better computer experience, get SSD for your system drive (Operating System).
If you need bigger storage to keep your personal data such family pictures, music, videos and working files, get HDD. It’s cheaper, get two and mirror each other for redundancy purpose in case 1 fails on you.
You can use both if you are using a PC or desktop. For laptop it will be a bit of challenge because due to constraint on the space in the laptop itself.

How to repair LCD burn-in and stuck pixels

In our previous blog post, 2 surprising facts that you might not know about your computer, we mentioned about how your LCD monitor might get "burned" by displaying the same image all day. This occurrence is called “burn-in” and there is also an occurrence called “stuck pixel”. So what is image “burn-in” and stuck pixel how does this happen?

Image Burn-In
Image burn-in is a problem with old CRT monitor or TV but with LCD, it is less susceptible. Burn-in or sometimes called “ghost image” happens when a monitor (CRT or LCD) is showing the same or repetitive image all day and left traces of previous images on the screen. It's the same effect as when you staring an object with a static background and suddenly shift your view to a blank sheet of paper. You will see traces of the object outlines sometimes the whole object on the blank paper. That is what image burn-in is.

Stuck Pixels
Defective pixel or commonly referred to as stuck pixel is an occurrence when one particular pixel in a screen, is not changing its color to the colors to what is supposed to be. Usually represented by a dark dot or a bright dot, this occurrence happens only in LCD monitors. It is sometime incorrectly referred to as ‘”dead pixel”, which usually resulting from manufacturing glitch or lacking of power to the pixel. Stuck pixels are repairable by using simple tool but dead pixel will require support from manufacturer to repair.

So how do you repair LCD burn-in or stuck pixel?
Both LCD burn-in and stuck pixel is repairable using a simple tool and usually won’t take you more than 10 minutes to solve it. The tool is called JScreenFix from http://www.jscreenfix.com. Tech In Asia Feature : Fynd crowdsources your tech support, gives IT pros more opportunities

This article is originally taken from Tech In Asia's coverage on Fynd. Click here for the original article.

Getting technical support can be tricky, especially if you’re an individual or a small enterprise. The tough part comes with separating honest folks from those eager to milk you for your cash. Finding the right techie for the job is tough too. After all, a person who does server admin may not know how to troubleshoot your laptop.

That’s where Fynd comes in. While its name is bland, Fynd does exactly what it says: matching an on-site tech support geek to your exact need, whether it’s software installation, router and network setup, or IT security.

The Singapore-based company wants to save you the trouble of dealing with dubious pricing. According to Fynd founder George Kuruvilla, each two-hour job will be charged at either S$79, S$99, or S$149 (US$60 to US$114). Alternatively, monthly subscription plans are available, costing S$1,000, S$3,000, or S$5,000 (between US$767 and US$3,800). All payments will be made online, and Fynd takes a 20 percent cut.

On the flip side, Fynd also wants to improve the earnings of tech support personnel by giving them an opportunity to make money using their free time. “The IT industry is changing at an alarming pace and IT organizations are struggling to keep up with this high demand for highly-skilled professionals,” says Kuruvilla.

“It’s unjustified from a business perspective to keep these professionals onboard when there are no projects. At the same time, hiring too little staff stagnates their growth and stalls the entire business.”

In other words, Fynd wants to help tech support firms increase their earnings by better matching supply and demand. The proposition is similar to startups belonging to what’s called the sharing economy. The brightest stars of this constallation of companies are Airbnb and Uber.

If done well, these companies bring real impact to society by improving the lot of the common man. Such testimonies are aplenty in India where taxi apps like Ola and TaxiForSure give some cab drivers more income and bring transparency to the industry. Kuruvilla hopes that Fynd too can make a positive contribution:

“Personally, we have seen IT professionals who work hard but find it extremely hard to afford important things in life like getting married and housing,” he says. “We met older IT professionals in their 40s and 50s who were unfortunately laid off from their jobs due to market fluctuations. They are keen to get work from us as they possess years of experience and skills.”

The company is still in the early stages and is seeking investments. It has verified over 40 geeks and completed 10 jobs three weeks after launch.

All three founders are working on Fynd full-time. Joining Kuruvilla – a former enterprise IT professional dabbling in mobile app design – is Albert Tirtohadi, an entrepreneur who grew point-of-sales (POS) solutions company Edgeworks to a 20-strong team. There’s also Jack Leow, a former auditor and Tirtohadi’s business partner at the POS firm.

The product is still in its early stages at this point, which means tasks are being assigned manually. Nonetheless, it’s building an algorithm that will power a Fynd mobile app for geeks. The app will let them accept jobs based on location, skillset, past performance, and timing preferences. The startup plans to automate the entire process, from customer inquiry to job completion – all in the name of social good.

“We want to redefine work by making it more democratic, where individual work is centered around a platform that connects them to business opportunity, as opposed to working for a company,” says Kuruvilla.

5 Possible Causes Your Disk Space Is Full

Does this happen to you before? It sucks if you have only one drive and even more when you know that you are not using much of space but something keep on eating up your disk space daily.

Here is our compilation of possible causes of your disk space full. Most of the screenshots are from my own laptop which never been formatted for 3 years now.

1.    Windows update files
Windows release its update every second Tuesday of a month unless if it’s critical out-of-band patches. It is always recommended to be update to date with Windows Update. To ensure the updates doesn’t cause any compatibility problem, the updates files are kept in the WinSxS folders. The problem is when you have a system which you have never perform a reformat, all those legacy updates files which have been superseded by latest updates remain in the folder. This cause the folder keeps on growing.

Here is the guideline on how to clean up the Windows Update files folder, WinSxS.
http://blogs.technet.com/b/askpfeplat/archive/2013/10/07/breaking-news-reduce-the-size-of-the-winsxs-directory-and-free-up-disk-space-with-a-new-update-for-windows-7-sp1-clients.aspx

2.    Symantec Endpoint Protection or Norton Antivirus Quarantined files
If you are using Symantec Anti Virus or Endpoint protection, there is a chance that your disk space was consumed to store quarantined files. This is more obvious when you are downloading or harboring a virus that you can’t clean up but keep on replicating itself and get quarantined. Though the size of the file might be small, but due to the frequency its replicating itself, it will add up and eating up your space quickly.
To check if your quarantine folder consuming the disk space, right click on the quarantine folder. You can clean this through the Anti Virus management interface or if you are in dire need of extra space and you know that the files in the quarantine folder is rubbish and none is valid, you can always delete it from the quarantine folder.
C:\ProgramData\Symantec\Symantec Endpoint Protection\<version number>\SRTSP\Quarantine

Note: Proceed with cautions.

3.    “System Restore” files
System Protection is a feature in Windows which allows the system to create a copy of system settings and previous versions of files. The benefit of System Protection is that, you are able to revert any system changes that you have done to previous restore points. Under System Properties > System Protection > Configure, you can configure the disk space usage for the System Protections to store the restore points. You can also delete the restore point in order to free up some space.
Note: One thing to note that, when deleting the restore points, you are risking yourself of not being able to revert any changes though you can always create the restore points manually using the System Restore tool. Proceed with cautions.

4.    Temporary files
Windows TEMP folder or Temporary folder is a folder used by Windows services and 3rd party software program to store temporary files and folders. Usually used for “staging” area when uncompressing zip files or a temporary space to download and run an updater file for a 3rd party software among others. Since, its temporary folder, it can be safely removed.
There are 2 types of temp folder;
1.    user temp folder - %USERPROFILE%\AppData\Local\ in Windows Vista, 7 and 8 or %USERPROFILE%\Local Settings\ for Windows XP and below
2.    Windows temp folder C:\Windows\
The easiest way to clean the temp folder is by using Disk Cleanup tool.

5.    Corrupted WMI Repositories
One of the common issue in my previous experience is my computer C drive keep on getting full every 2 days even though I have clean up about 60GB of spaces. After some investigation, it was due to corrupted of WMI repositories. Based on my reading, this only happens in an enterprise environment which using System Center Configuration Manager (SCCM). When the SCCM agent detected there is inconsistency on the WMI repositories, it will try to recreate or rebuild the repositories resulting in multiple copies of the repositories as seen in the screenshot below. Depending on the size of the WMI repository, it might end up eating the whole free space in your disk in a matter of days.

If you have similar symptom, you might want to check the WBEM folder (C:\Windows\System32\wbem). To clean it up, just delete the folder with the name repository.xxx where x is a number.

End note

As you can see, I have about 25GB of space available for free just from cleaning up my Windows update files, temporary files and deleting system restore points. Most of the time, you can get by by using  Disk Cleanup tool to clean up the common items such as Temporary Files, Windows Update and Service pack files as well as other smaller non critical non system files. For other things, please seek help from a professional.

How to do a clean install of OS X Yosemite on your Mac? (in just 10 steps!)

OSX Yosemite is Apple's best and the most advanced OS's yet. But like me, many of you want to do a clean install on your Mac rather than upgrade your OS X Mavericks. OS X Yosemite will install a completely clean slate version of itself on the blank destination drive, giving the user a fresh start.

So, here are in 10 easy steps on how to do a clean install of OS X Yosemite on your Mac:

1. Back up the Mac with Time Machine or by manually copying your most important data to an external drive – never skip backing up your important data

2. Create a Bootable OSX Yosemite installer (click here to see how to do it)

3. Plug in your bootable OS X Yosemite installer drive to the Mac, then restart as normal

4. During restarting press down the OPTION key until a boot selection menu appears, choose “Install OS X Yosemite” as the drive to boot (this is the bootable OS X Yosemite installer drive)

5. When the “OS X Utilities” screen appears, choose “Disk Utility”

6. Choose the hard drive (or partition) from the left side menu which is the destination for the clean Yosemite install, then choose the “Erase” tab

7. Choose the Format type as “Mac OS Extended (Journaled)”, name the drive something obvious (like Macintosh HD or Yosemite HD), and then choose “Erase” – this will format the drive / partition and all contents on it.

8. When the drive has finished formatting, quit Disk Utility to return to the OS X Utilities menu

9. Now from the “OS X Utilities” menu, select “Install OS X”

10. Click through the Terms of Service and basics, and select the freshly formatted “Macintosh HD” or “Yosemite HD” drive to set as the destination for the fresh install of OS X. Installing this can take quite a while, so go grab a coffee!

When installation has complete, the Mac will reboot into OS X Yosemite and go through the normal new setup process.

Remember, no data will be on the volume aside from the fresh Yosemite installation, so it’s up to the user to re-install necessary apps, adjust preferences, and most importantly, recover or transfer over again their important documents and files.

6 Tips on significantly improving laptop battery life

Image Courtesy Wired.com Image Courtesy Wired.com

“Beep!!” That’s the irky sound that I always hear whenever my laptop is low on battery especially when I’m about to finished my assignments and there no power source nearby!

Standard 6-cell battery last about 2 to 4 hours and 9-cell battery can last 4 to 7 hours. Some of the latest model especially ultrabook claims to have more than 8 hours of battery life. But if you are like me, still using a standard “cost-effective” laptop, you are always looking for ways to extend you battery life. Here are few tips to improve your battery life.

1.    Disable Bluetooth or Wifi when not in used
I hardly use Bluetooth except for transferring files and the last time that I actually use it was 3 years ago. If you are not using any Bluetooth headphone or Bluetooth keyboard/mouse, disable it. Most laptop manufacturer has built-in the function key to control the wireless component (as seen in below screenshot). You can also disable it from the Device Manager.

2.    Adjust screen brightness
One of the things that consume a lot of power is your laptop screen. The brighter it is, the more power it consumes. So, it’s a good idea to lower your screen brightness so you can have longer online time ;)

3.    Windows: Change power plan
If you are on Windows, you can use the built-in Power Plan to manage the behavior of your laptop when plugged in and when on battery. I will always recommend people to you use Balanced power plan as it has been calibrated by the Microsoft team to provide balance performance with energy consumptions. If you are feeling adventures, you can even change the CPU maximum speed (more speed, more power) or control the amount of power allowed through USB.

4.    Plugged out external hard drive
An external hard drive is the same as normal hard drive. A normal hard drive will require 4 to 6 Watts on normal load but you it will require additional Watts to powered it up over USB. So, if you have no use for external drive, just plugged it out!

5.    Disable DVD/CD Drive
Similar to Bluetooth, I hardly use my DVD-ROM nowadays. If you noticed, there are times when your CD/DVD ROM is making noise by itself even though you didn’t slot it any CD/DVD. So by disabling this, you can squeeze out more juice from your battery. You can disable it from Device Manager under Computer Management.

6.    Change to SSD
I wrote an article on SSD vs HDD. Which to use? SSD doesn’t have mechanical parts so it consume less power and produce less heat, making it perfect solution for those who is always on the run. With more heath produced, more energy required it cool it down and that’s one of the reason why ultrabook can offer longer lasting battery life, it’s because they are using SSD.

2 surprising facts that you might not know about your computer

There are 2 surprising facts that you might not know about your computer. Only 2 facts? Really? Yes, 2 big facts that not many people knows about their computers.

1.     Your Computers draw power even in sleep/hibernate/shutdown mode

You might think yeah, sleep mode might still be drawing power but why is it in shut down and hibernate mode still drawing the power? Aren’t they supposed to be already powered off? Not exactly.

In Sleep mode, computer is still using your computer memory (RAM) to store a snapshot of what your computer is doing before it’s going into sleep mode. If you noticed, when you wake your computer up from a sleep mode, by pressing any keyboard keys or moving your mouse, you always get the thing that you’ve worked on, maybe you’re video or your assignment in Microsoft words or excel. Compared to hibernate, sleep mode is much faster to starts up. In order to achieve that, it will need to draw power to be always in standby mode waiting for any event that can trigger for it to wakes up.

Shutdown mode is basically the state where the computer is shut off. Just imagine that you are dead tired and went into a deep sleep state where you won’t be woken up by simple disruptions.

Hibernate similar to sleep mode but instead of always on standby mode it’s shut down. As in sleep mode, your computer will take snapshots of what your computer is doing before it’s going to hibernate but instead of storing it in your computer memory, it will store as a file in your computer hard disk. So, when your computer boots up again, it will have everything that you’re working on. Unlike sleep mode which provides instantaneous resumption, hibernate boots like a normal boot up but instead of starting up fresh, it will restore the computer state from the snapshots it took before it went to hibernate mode.

So why in Shutdown and hibernate mode still drawing power? There are a few causes of this.

a. Wake-on-LAN: it’s a feature of your computer network card to allow you boot up or waking up your computer from a remote location using the network. The feature requires the network card is powered on and listening to the requests even when your computer is shut off.

b.     Wake-on-keyboard or mouse: to wake your computer up from a hibernate state, you will need to push the “on” button or you can use your keyboard or mouse to trigger it. For this to happen, the computer needs to make sure that the USB input is supplied with power to receive input from the keyboard or mouse.

c.     LED light: LED lights is used to indicate certain component is functioning or powered. Check your computer if it has LED lights near the power supply or if you are using Wifi/3G dongle, check if the LED turned on or not. Chances are there will be LED lights and it draw power to light the LED up even when the computer if off.

2.     Your LCD monitor will get "burned" by displaying the same image all day

Well, it’s not exactly burned down as in fire or blown up. What I meant is that your LCD monitor will get a “burn-in” pixel or after-image when displaying the same image for too long. Try to disable the power plan and you screen saver. Change you wallpaper to a bright colored on and leave it on for few hours. You will see an after-image or in the old LCD monitor, you will get dead pixels.

Dead pixels are spots in your monitor that are either constantly showing dark dot or a bright dot and it is sometimes annoying to look at. Dead pixel doesn’t just go away.

An after-image on the other hand, will linger around for some time even after you try to turn off and on again. We will write another blog post soon to cover how to clear it up dead pixel so that you can prevent unnecessary laptop repair.

5 ways to boost your Wifi speed and signal

Are you sick and tired of always refreshing your browser, restarting your router and rebooting your computer hoping that it would load your webpages faster?

Today your Internet Service Provider (ISP) provides even the fastest and greatest network speed and bandwidth out there but if your Wifi router isn’t set up correctly, it will still feel like a dial-up at the end of the day. Setting up a brand new router can be rarely fun but if you are brave and determined enough, here are five tips that can your wifi to the next level.

1. Choose the right channel and frequency
Just changing the channel on your router can make a huge difference. Try channels 1, 6 or 11. If those don't work, go to 2 or 10 next. Try until you feel like your Wifi speeds are gaining.
Wi-Fi routers can broadcast in different frequencies. If you have a bigger home choose 2.4 GHz because the signal travels farther and can more easily penetrate through walls. But for smaller rooms or homes, 5 GHz is the way to go: it offers much faster speeds, albeit in a shorter range.

2. Move your router to its ideal position
A tall shelf in the middle of a room is the best place for your router. Think high and centrally located.
If your Wi-Fi router has antennas, and you need the signal to go through a wall, position the antennas in straight angles so they go right through the wall. Signals that travel through walls at an angle can severely reduce Wi-Fi speeds.
Also, it's important to adapt to your surroundings -- ceiling height, room size and certain building materials can adversely affect Wi-Fi speeds. Keep your router away from thick walls made of brick or concrete. But the biggest enemies of Wi-Fi are water and windows. Nearby pipes and even plants (there's water in all those leaves) can slow Wi-Fi to a crawl. Reflective surfaces can make Wi-Fi signals bounce at strange angles.

3. Make sure your router is secure
Apart from security putting a password on your router or limiting which devices can access your network will keep Wi-Fi hoggers from slowing down your network.

4. Get a newer router
New routers have smarter technology that can directly transmit to devices instead of beaming signals randomly around a room. Apart from faster speeds and multiple frequencies, they also know which devices to give priority to.

5. Buy a network extender
Network extenders are a cost effective way to boost a signal in those hard-to-reach corners of your home. If you have some old routers lying around you can use them as a network extender as well. Too complex? May be you can give us a regarding laptop repair or network fine tuning and our geeks will be more than happy to be of help :)

5 Ways to Speed up Your Computer Startup

Nothing more dreaded than rebooting your computer 15 minutes before your deadline! Yes, it might take only a minute or two (if everything is OK) but it can seem forever! Here is 5 ways that we you can speed up you computer startup.

1. Remove/Disable Unnecessary Service

If you notice, when you boot up your computer things start popping up one by one to the point of freezing up your computer.

You got your Yahoo Messenger and Skype starting up and trying to auto sign in or maybe your antivirus starting up and running a quick scan and when you try to open up the Windows Explorer, your computer start showing those vexing hourglass.

That’s the thing that you see. What about the programs or services that you didn’t see running on the background during the startup like your Bluetooth service or your Adobe updater?

Here how you can remove or disable some of these services.
a. Click Start  and type Run. In the Open box, type in msconfig and click OK button.

b. System Configuration dialog box will popup. Click on Startup tab. You can see what actually triggered when your computer boots up or when you logging to your windows profile. Uncheck the box which you felt unnecessary.

Here is before I make any changes.

Here is after changes have been made. I only left those necessary Windows service only.

2.    Change services run at startup to "Automatic (Delay Start)"

Another way to speed up your windows loading time is by delaying some of the services from executing during the windows startup.

a.    Click Start  and type Run. In the Open box, type in services.msc and click OK button.

b.    The services management console will popup (as per screenshot). Click on “Startup Type” column to sort the services startup by “Automatic”.

c.    Double click on any of the service that you might think not necessary to start early.

Caution: Make sure you read the service description. Rule of thumb, if you are not sure what kind of service it is, don’t change it. The best service to disable is from the third party such as Adobe, Java or Foxit.

d.    On the Startup Type, change from Automatic to Automatic (Delayed Start). Click the OK button.

e.    You are done! Repeat c & d for other services.

3. Upgrade your RAM

Sometimes, you just ran out juice. Applications are more sophisticated nowadays and some of them requires more memory than others and it keeps on increasing year after year. If you don’t regularly reformat your machine, it’s a good idea to upgrade your RAM to a larger one (eg. 1GB to 2GB or 4GB).

Just make sure if you are upgrading to 4GB or more, you are using Windows OS 64-bit to fully utilized the memory. If you are running on 32-bit Windows OS, you are limited to 3.25GB of memory due to the limitation of the 32-bit platform.

4. Change your hard disk to Solid State Drive (SSD)

These days, your hard disk might be the one holding you back from getting a good performance on your computer. This includes faster Windows loading time.

Good thing is that technology once again saves the day, introducing the Solid State Drive or SSD. For 40 years, hard disk has been the same, one spindle and few layers of thin flat platters, which store your data. So, it’s limited mostly due to the mechanical parts. SSD on the other hand are using similar technology as your USB thumb drive. So, it’s less depending on that one particular spindle to read or write your data in the hard disk, giving you a better read and write speed.

5. Uninstall program that you never use

Another simple solution is to just uninstall any program that you never use or use it once or twice only. By doing this, it removes all unnecessary services and background processes that it might be running as well as freeing up the space in your hard disk. Simple isn’t it? With this tweaks, you can DIY(Do it Yourself) laptop repair at home if your computer is slow.

5 Common Reasons for Your PC Slowdown

If you noticed that when you trying to work faster on your computer and you always get a white screen when you click Windows Explorer or your mouse freeze for a moment before it went crazy, you know that your PC is having a slowdown. Here are 5 common reasons for your PC slowdown.

1. Your computer has not been rebooted for a long time

When you leave your computer on without rebooting for a long time, you might feel like your computer is sluggish and slow, and even freeze. This was caused by a number of things, but the primary reason is that your RAM is loaded up with a bunch of stuff which sometimes is not properly purged. Think of it like you haven’t slept for 48 hours or 72 hours. How does it feel? I’m sure you felt sluggish, disoriented and uncoordinated. The same goes to computers.
Recommendation: Try shutting down your computer every time you are done or at least rebooting your computer once in a while and you should be able to see the difference.

2. Disk corruption or fragmented hard disk

One of the many causes of disk corruptions are improper shutdown or in the case of external hard drive is improperly dismounted. Other causes are virus infections and hard disk overheated.
In the case of disk fragmented, think of it like walking into unfamiliar NTUC or Giant with a long shopping list and the layout is disorganized. Some foods products are in between toys rack and detergent. Do you think that you will finish your shopping list faster or slower? I would imagine that it would take a longer time to finish. The same goes to hard disk. With the bits of data scattered around the whole disk, it will take longer time for it to read or write a data since it need to look all over place and remember that each disk has only one spindle. So, it can only read or write one at a time.
Recommendation: Defrag your computer once in a while and check for bad sectors. Do take note that if you are using SSD hard disk, there is no need to defrag your hard disk

3. Low available memory (RAM)

This is straight forward. Year after year, programs are becoming much better and more complex thus the resource it requires will increase. If you have a 2 years old computer, definitely you will have more software or programs than what you have a year before. In the year 2010, 1GB RAM is a standard and can run fairly decent but in 2014, 4GB is becoming more standard now. So, if you have more software programs running in your computers and your computer memory is choked often, please upgrade your RAM.
Recommendation: upgrade or add more RAM

4. Too much paging

Paging is a technique used by the operating system to store and retrieves data from secondary storage (in this case it’s your hard disk) to be use in main memory. When you start a program, the program will be loaded into the computer memory and part of the program will be stored as pages in the Page files which stored in your local hard disk. This to ensure that the memory is not overloaded and run as efficient as it can since some part of program will not be used all the time. Too much paging happens when available memory is low and your computer requires more memory to run your programs. Since it has little space in the memory, it will turn to page file more, causing your computer to slow down. This was due to the fact that the page file is access like a normal disk operation which is limited by the one spindle on the hard disk.
Recommendation: upgrade or add more RAM or change to a faster hard disk.

5. Infected by malware or virus(es)

Some virus caused your PC slowdown since it tries a bunch of things such as creating multiple copies of itself, sending a high amount of traffic to other machine as part of DDoS attacks or some might use your computer as an email server to send out spams email. You will notice that sometimes your CPU usage spike up but you were not sure what cause it to happen. Try updating your antivirus and run a manual scan. Try to scan your computer for rootkit and malware as well.
Recommendation: Make sure that your computer is installed with latest Microsoft updates and installed with antivirus.
